A Once in a Lifetime Adventure
Mongolian winter is both harsh and breathtaking perfect for those seeking a true winter adventure. From February to March, the nomads embark on one of the toughest migrations of the year, traveling up to 200 kilometers to find better pastures and protect their newborn animals. You’ll follow the same migration routes, staying in traditional Gers, sharing meals, and even riding horses alongside the nomads. While there are three migrations per year, the most difficult is the winter migration, as harsh weather and scarce resources make the journey especially challenging. The primary reason for this migration is to reach new pastures before the animals give birth. Wintering areas are more abundant and of better quality, allowing pregnant animals to maintain their strength throughout the season. In these regions, newborn animals can be protected and cared for properly, as there are larger, warmer, and specially designed winter shelters. The migration itself covers approximately 150 to 200 km, and the journey is extremely challenging, with temperatures often reaching –25°C. For this reason, it is not possible to complete the migration after the birth, since newborns cannot survive such a long and arduous journey.
The Coldest, Yet Most Beautiful Experience This will likely be the coldest tour you’ve ever done, but also one of the most beautiful. As you brave the winter chill of the Altai Mountains, you’ll experience the raw, unfiltered beauty of this remote region. The rugged, snow-covered landscape, coupled with the incredible resilience of the nomadic people, makes for an unforgettable adventure that few will ever experience. sheep, and goats, and witness the harsh beauty of a winter migration few travelers will ever see.
